William (Billy) Albert Putman

This website is a genealogical photo gallery for Putmans. Putmans at one time heavily populated Benton County in northwest Arkansas and were noted as business owners, farmers, bankers, and politicians. Today, Putman descendants carry the names Compton, Dubbel, Hardister, Hufford, Knox, McCann, Peak, Scoggins, Welborn and others. There aren't many left with the name Putman.

Thomas Putnam (1623 - ca. 1648)

Thomas Putnam and his wife Dorothy came to Virginia aboard the sailing ship, Increase in 1647. They had one son.

    James Putman married Joice, his wife, sometime around the early 1760s, probably in North Carolina. He and his family moved to South Carolina in the 1770s.

    • Joseph Putman (1769 - )

     Joseph Putman was possibly born in Virginia sometime about 1769, or in South Carolina, where his folks, James and Joice, held a land grant in 1770. Joseph married Milly Wilson about 1793. She was likely a daughter of Jahu Wilson, who lived nearby, since they named their eldest son Jahu. By 1800 Joseph and Milly had five very young children and lived in Pendleton County in South Carolina. By 1820 Joseph and Milly had ten children, another son and two daughters born between 1801 and 1810, and two girls between 1810 and 1820. (Not all children's names are found, since a fire at the courthouse destroyed records, but other children were likely Phoebe and Arena (Reany or Irene.) By 1830 they had moved to Bedford County, Tennessee, and were living next door to William Dollar; several of his kids maried Putmans. Milly died Oct. 1, 1834, at age 60.

    Jahu Putman (Mar 02, 1794 - Jan 01, 1880)

     Jahu Putman (sometimes spelled Jehu, often called John) was born in Wilson County, Tennessee March 2, 1794, while George Washington was president.

    Jahu and his father, Joseph, fought side-by-side in the War of 1812, serving in Captain Moorhead's South Carolina Volunteers. They went to join General Jackson, but got there too late to fight in the battle, which only lasted an hour or two, so they were sent to fight against Creek Indians, who had allied with the British. When he was 77-years-old, Jahu's applied for and began receiving a pension of $8 a month.

    On Jan. 21, 1817, Jahu married Rachel Bond. Daughter of William and Margaret Bond, she was born in South Carolina Jan. 11, 1798. Shortly after their marriage a bunch of Putmans and Bonds and others headed west to Tennessee where Jahu took his "Bounty Claim" for war service. He lived in Wilson County from 1850 to 1870. At the time of Jahu's death Jan. 17, 1880, he lived with his son James and his second wife, Mary Newcomb. Rachel had also died there Mar. 20, 1876. Both are buried in the Putman Cemetery in Benton County.

They live next door to his folks. George H. Putman and William T. Putman are buried in the Rogers Cemetery, Rogers AR

    Albert Putman was the son of J M and Teresa Price Putman. He married Lela Ann Hileman (Dec 22, 1894 - Feb 10, 1953) on Nov 3, 1912. Lela was the daughter of William and Virgina Hileman. Albert and Lela had six sons:
