Henry Putnam (1550s - 1589)

Thomas Putnam (1623 - ca. 1648)

Thomas Putnam, his wife Dorothy and their son Thomas came to Jamestown, Virginia from Chesham Parish, Buckinghamshire, England aboard the sailing ship, Increase in Dec 1647.
Putman's in Virginia. Thomas Putnam's family arrived in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia in early January, 1648. They settled in Kingston Parish in Gloucester County. Thomas died after arriving in Virginia. This was a tough time for Thomas' wife and you son. According to his will, "Mr. Coxyn, Chirurgeon aboard the Ship", would take care of his widow and son. His widow remarried John Smyth, probably the captain of the ship that brought them to Virginia. By this time, Jamestown was a royal colony and was divided into 8 shires in 1634. Gloucester County was formed from York County in 1651, part of the original Charles River Shire. Virginia's population in 1648 has grown to include 15,000 whites and 300 Africans.

7-1 Jahu Putman (Mar 02, 1794 - Jan 01, 1880)

Jahu Putman (sometimes spelled Jehu, often called John) was born in South Carolina March 2, 1794, while George Washington was president.

Jahu and his father, Joseph, fought side-by-side in the War of 1812, serving in Captain Moorhead's South Carolina Volunteers. They went to join General Jackson, but got there too late to fight in the battle, which only lasted an hour or two, so they were sent to fight against Creek Indians, who had allied with the British. When he was 77-years-old, Jahu's applied for and began receiving a pension of $8 a month.

On Jan. 21, 1817, Jahu married Rachel Bond. Daughter of William and Margaret Bond, she was born in South Carolina Jan. 11, 1798. Shortly after their marriage a bunch of Putmans and Bonds and others headed west to Tennessee where Jahu took his "Bounty Claim" for war service. He lived in Wilson County from 1850 to 1870. At the time of Jahu's death Jan. 17, 1880, he lived with his son James and his second wife, Mary Newcomb. Rachel had also died there Mar. 20, 1876. Both are buried in the Putman Cemetery in Benton County.
